Road Trip Cost Calculator

Work out what a road trip will cost, free and with no sign-up: enter the distance, your car's mpg (or L/100 km, or EV efficiency) and the fuel price, add tolls, parking, hotels and food, and get the total and the cost per person. It uses your numbers only, with no made-up prices.

The gas cost formula

Gas cost = miles ÷ mpg × price per gallon. A 600-mile round trip in a car that does 30 mpg uses 20 gallons; at 3.50 a gallon that is 70. In kilometres: km × L/100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre, so 1,000 km at 7 L/100 km uses 70 litres. For an electric car, divide miles by miles per kWh (or multiply km by kWh/100 km ÷ 100) and multiply by the price per kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Is this road trip cost calculator free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded.

How is the fuel cost worked out?

Miles ÷ mpg × price per gallon, or km × litres per 100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. Round trips double the distance, and the extra-driving percentage is added on top for detours.

Does it know gas prices, distances or tolls?

No. It has no maps or live prices. Get the distance and tolls from a route planner such as Google Maps, and the price from a pump or a fuel-price app; the calculator does the maths.

Does it work for electric cars?

Yes. Choose Electric and enter miles per kWh (or kWh per 100 km) and your average price per kWh across home and public charging.

What mpg should I use?

Your car's real highway average from its trip computer is best. Use a lower figure for roof boxes, towing, a full load or mountain driving.

How do I split the cost between passengers?

The per-person figure divides everything evenly. If people paid for different things along the way, use the free trip cost splitter to see who owes whom.

How long will the drive take?

Distance ÷ your average speed including stops. 55 mph (85 km/h) is a typical door-to-door average on highways with breaks; it is an estimate, not a route time.

Can I plan the stops too?

Yes. Make a day-by-day itinerary with the free itinerary maker, or download the travel planner spreadsheet with bookings and budget tabs.
