How to split group trip costs fairly

  1. List everyone on the trip, including people who paid nothing yet.
  2. Add each expense with the person who paid it: the villa, car hire, fuel, groceries, dinners and tickets.
  3. Untick anyone who didn't share it, like a tour only some joined. Shared items stay split equally.
  4. Settle up with the payments listed: each one is a single bank transfer or payment-app request.

Example

Ann pays a 600 villa for three people and Bo pays 90 for a dinner all three shared. Each person's share is 230, so Ann is owed 370, Bo owes 140 and Cy owes 230. The splitter lists two payments: Cy pays Ann 230 and Bo pays Ann 140.

Frequently asked questions

Is this trip cost splitter free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, for up to 20 people and 200 expenses per trip.

How does it work out who owes whom?

Each expense is shared equally by the people ticked for it. Everyone's balance is what they paid minus their share; then the person who owes most pays the person owed most, repeated until everyone is even.

Can some expenses be shared by only part of the group?

Yes. Untick people under “Split between” for that expense, for example a dinner only three of five people went to.

How many payments does it take to settle up?

At most one fewer than the number of people, and usually fewer. Each line in Settle up is one transfer.

Does it convert currencies?

No. Pick one currency and type every amount in it. If you paid in another currency, convert it first using the rate on your card statement.

Is my list saved?

Only in this browser, so a refresh keeps it. Nothing is sent to our server. Use Copy summary, Excel or Print to share it with the group.

Can I split uneven shares, like one room for two people?

Yes, by adding it as a separate expense shared by just those people. Percentage or weighted shares are not supported.

Can I keep a running expense log for the whole trip?

Yes. Download the free travel planner spreadsheet: its Expense log and Budget tabs total spending by category and show who paid what.
