Frequently asked questions

Is this travel budget calculator free?

Yes. It is free to use, print and save, with no sign-up.

How is the total worked out?

Accommodation per night × nights (days − 1), plus food and activities per person per day × travellers × days, plus local transport per day × days, plus one-off travel and extras, plus your safety margin.

Does it know what things cost at my destination?

No. It has no built-in prices, because we don't hold verified, current cost data. Type amounts from your own bookings, quotes or research; the calculator does the maths.

Why is the number of nights one less than the days?

A 7-day trip usually has 6 nights of accommodation. If you sleep away on your last day too, add a day or include that night in Extras.

Can I split the cost between travellers?

Yes, evenly: the per-person figure divides the total by the number of travellers. To settle who paid what, use the free trip cost splitter.

Which currency does it use?

The one you choose. Amounts are not converted, so type them all in that currency.

How much safety margin should I add?

The calculator starts at 10%. Set it higher if prices are uncertain or you have not booked yet, or to 0 if everything is prepaid.

Can I keep the budget with my itinerary?

Yes. Click Save to My trips: the trip gets these amounts as its planned budget, and you can log real expenses against them and add a day-by-day itinerary and packing list.
